I was twelve when the ROCK Counseling Ministries started. Not that I had any concept whatsoever of the word “Rock” nor any inkling toward a career in counseling. Although, what I did have was fundamentally everything I needed to start ROCK Counseling Ministries. The story goes like this. I grew up in a Christian home with loving and dedicated parents. Not perfect parents, but good parents. They taught me the value of family as well as right from wrong. I saw my parents go through tough times yet stick together. I witnessed their mistakes too, but I have to say that their commitment to one another has stood the test of time. I’m incredibly grateful for this, especially because of how rare it is these days. Unfortunately, divorce, addictions, abuse and the like have affected many others, including people close to me and this is where the ROCK Counseling story really begins. I remember noticing significant changes in people dealing with broken relationships and broken spirits. This change involved people retreating more into themselves, and at the same time acting out with more negative behaviors. It involved making inappropriate decisions with sex and substances, as well as an unhealthy dose of disrespect toward others and a growing sense of opposition toward authority. It involved people choosing negative influences over positive. Some people had dramatic changes involving extreme restlessness, anxiety, depression, defiance, independence, unhealthy coping mechanisms, the wearing of masks, the pursuit of selfish pleasures, a pervasive lack of trust, and significant spiritual doubts. Did I realize all of this when I was younger? Of course not…at least not all conscientiously! But I have learned it overtime. From early on, I did feel and see people’s pain and read the confusion on their faces and realized that they had been profoundly hurt. It was at this point that I knew if there was anything I could do to stop this from happening to anyone else I would. It was soon after this that my knowledge grew and I found out some of the causes to this pain — disillusionment, death, divorce, betrayal, abandonment, addiction, and much more. This was the moment my calling and passion came to fruition and the seed began to grow that has now become ROCK Counseling Ministries. I am sold out to see people healed, couples reconciled, families restored, and lives transformed. However, while all of this directed me heavily into the world of mental health, God wasn’t finished preparing me yet for all He has called me to do.

Many years later after practicing clinical counseling for well over a decade, God gave me a dream…literally. I found myself at dusk in a dimly lit room full of gray walls. In the foreground were Christians and in the background were unbelievers. Everyone of them were being tormented by demons. The Christians were being oppressed and confused from the outside, yet in the power of Christ barely had enough strength to stand and cry out for help. The unbelievers were possessed and writhing around on the ground unable to stand, and they were completely lost, screaming for help to anyone that would come. God was right next to me and said, “What are you going to do?” I was unsure and asked Him what He meant. He reminded me of the power in His name, yet I was still not confident in how to proceed. I knew I wanted to and that I should, but I doubted. I was about to move forward in faith toward the chaos, but I turned to God and said, “I don’t think I’m ready yet.” He said, “You’re not, but you will be.” Immediately, the dream ended.

God then gave me the interpretation of the dream. The room I was in represents Christian counseling offices everywhere that have become gray, dull, and bland; having a small amount of the light that might barely shine from time to time, but the true Light of Christ is being mostly hidden with His power mostly denied. It is not that Christians nor Christian counselors don’t have God’s light or power but instead that they have hidden it and rarely use it. We need Christ, His light, His Word, and the power of His Spirit because the enemy is real (Eph. 6:12), prowling around like a lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He is stealing, killing, and destroying (John 10:10) and has obviously ravished the realm of mental health as is evident by people struggling more than ever before. Specifically, God revealed that people’s primary struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the enemy of our souls, against the spiritual forces of this world, and against the darkness of this age. Our eyes need to be opened to the Truth that the battle is spiritual above all else and that the name of Christ is the only One that holds the power to save!

It doesn’t have to take a dream or decades of Christian counseling experience for one to know this is true. It just happened to take this to wake me up and stop being so “clinical” and “professional,” aka…bland and dull. If we just look around, we can easily see Christians everywhere prioritizing many things above Christ and their spiritual well-being. All you need to do further is to spend a bit of time in any counseling office anywhere, whether Christian or not, and you’ll find out very quickly how much physical and mental health is prioritized above all the other facets of human well being. Whether it be insurance companies, government policies, or ethics codes, they overwhelming push false ideologies that prioritize mental healthcare of spiritual healthcare. From time to time, they may give “spirituality” just a bit of credence in word, but nothing in deed. When absolutely necessary Christians will give them spirituality some notice as well, but usually only a sprinkling or when all else fails. I say, how about we don’t wait for failure? How about we press forward into a new land flowing with God’s wisdom and power? Why wait any longer? Haven’t we had enough mediocrity! You would think that Christian counselors directly get to lead people to Christ on a regular basis. Don’t be fooled any longer, cause they don’t…until now. No one yet has risen up against this in any real unified way, until now. God is on the move to take back the land that is rightfully His (Deut. 31:8). The Spirit of the LORD rests in counsel, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, power, and the fear of God (Isaiah 11:2). It’s time for Christian Counseling to get back to the full light of Christ in abundance of life! It’s time to equip those who have been called to become who they are meant to be.
